*Many, many ACT trainings since 1999, including didactic and experiential courses and workshops taught by Steve Hayes, Kirk Strosahl, Kelly Wilson, Patti Robinson, Joanne Dahl, and Georg Eifert.
*Participation in 2003 World Conference on Third Wave Behavior Therapies (Scientific Committee Member and Presenter); Participation in the 2004 and 2005 ACT Summer Institutes - Sample workshops attended include: Relational Frame Theory: Basic and Applied Issues (Dermot Barnes-Holmes); Integrating ACT into Healthcare (Patty Robinson & Kirk Strosahl); Values-Centered Interventions (Kelly Wilson); Process-Oriented Supervision and Research Training (Kelly Wilson). Sample workshops led or co-led with students and colleagues: (1) ACT with children, adolescents, and families; (2) Acceptance, body image, and health in adolescence and young adulthood; (3) Measuring ACT processes in youth
My research focuses on ACT principles, processes, and clinical methods, with the ultimate goal of developing and evaluating ACT protocols for children and adolescents with a wide range of chronic health conditions. In collaboration with colleagues and students, I am developing and refining measures of acceptance and mindfulness for youth (e.g., the Avoidance and Fusion Questionnaire and the Children's Acceptance and Mindfulness Measure). I've also collaborated with medical colleagues in pediatric gastroenterology and diabetes to examine the impact of ACT processes and clinical methods on youth with chronic health conditions. My colleagues and I have published empirical and conceptual papers on the integration of acceptance and mindfulness into behavioral treatments for youth struggling with various conditions such as anxiety, eating disorders, and chronic illness. Book chapters and conceptual papers have focused largely on the theoretically coherent adaptation of ACT principles, processes, and clinical methods to various child and adolescent populations.
ACT Teaching/Training:
I offer seminars and workshops to psychology students and faculty, psychiatry trainees, and other health professionals in the medical center and community. I’ve developed these seminars to be both didactic and experiential in nature and rely heavily on role plays and experiential exercises to demonstrate core principles and clinical methods used in ACT. I also provide guest lectures on ACT in graduate psychotherapy classes and have presented at research and clinical colloquia in the psychology department and medical school.
My favorite training endeavors include working with my ACT research and clinical teams at the University of Missouri. Practicum training experiences include adapting ACT to meet the unique psychosocial and developmental needs of children, adolescents, and families presenting at our department's outpatient clinic. Research interests include:
* Investigation of the nature and role of ACT processes over time (especially throughout childhood and adolescence)
* Development and evaluation of ACT protocols for youth struggling with various conditions (e.g., anxiety, depression, chronic pain, eating disorders, chronic illness)
* Development and evaluation of ACT-relevant measures
* Integration of ACT principles and methods into family, school, and medical settings
