I first contacted ACT in the early 1990s before graduate school, at a time when ACT was known as comprehensive distancing. My graduate training in clinical behavior analysis and behavior therapy gave me the philosophical, technical, and applied background that I needed to fully understand this work. I became hooked. During this time, I was fortunate to have connected with a small band of fellow travelers who were pursuing this new wave agenda. Too many names to list, but if you know ACT, then you know who they are. Now, over 10 years later, I continue to do basic and applied ACT-related research, and am active in training graduate students and professionals. The fun never ends!
I've authored a few books on ACT -- "Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for anxiety disorders: A practitioner's treatment guide to using mindfulness, acceptance, and value-based behavior change strategies"; "ACT on life, not on anger: The new acceptance and commitment therapy guide to problem anger"; and, have a forthcoming client-oriented tradebook in the pipe with Georg Eifert, titled "The ACT on Anxiety Workbook: Using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Anxiety, Phobias, and Worry."
