I show people how to quit alcohol and/or drugs forever without going to aa or na. What is similar to act is that I have them experience the desire (thoughts and feelings) to use. I show people why they can quit forever and talk about values. When the person endorses the value of abstience, I show them the difference between a choice and a decision. Once they have the value and decide they will not drink or drug, I want them to become familiar with the feeling to use and have the experience of not using. The feeling to use is presented as irresistable in aa/na and relapse prevention. That is false. Once someone can exerience the feeling to use as just a feeling and not what they are, then they can follow the behavior or not picking up and consuming because their decision has resulted in a commitment to a value they can carry out forever in all environments. This sounds similar to what I heard in the presentation and I want to learn more about relational frame theory, and contextual psychology to determine if I can augment helping people quitting forever by just quitting and not solving problems to quit.
