I've been familiar with ACT since about 2005. I've done a lot of reading about it since this time. I have completed the following workshops:
- Mindfulness for 2: ACT Workshop in Seattle, WA with Kelly Wilson (6/08)
- 3-Day Advanced Training in ACT Case Conceptualization Practice with Kelly Wilson (4/08)
- Introductory ACT Experiential Workshop with Vijay Shankar (11/07)
I plan to attend several more trainings in the future.
I have been supervised by an ACT-trained psychologist, have co-led 'mindfulness skills' groups based on the ACT framework, and have used ACT in individual sessions.
Substance abuse, combat-related PTSD and other anxiety, depression, personality disorders
I'm currently a psychology resident at the Kansas City VA Medical Center. I will complete my residency in August of 2008. I will be applying to VA psychologist positions in the Spring of 2009.
I have had a lot of training in applying mindfulness to treatment in general, and have practiced mindfulness meditation for about 5 years. I see ACT as an ambitious and coherent paradigm integrating cognitive behavioral therapy, gestalt therapy, the acceptance approaches, and many forms of spirituality. I want to become as skilled as possible in this approach so that I can use it in my future job. My current plan is to work with PTSD and/or substance abuse veterans at one of the VA hospitals in the US.
