I have been studying the ACT literature for several months now, as of 12/08. This mode of working is second nature to me however due to my Eastern philosophy, mindfulness/contemplative background. Although completely secular, ACT shares quite a lot in common with Eastern philosophy and religion. I am starting to use the ACT protocols with clients and am excited to do so.
Although I just begain using ACT specific protocols, I have been using mindfulness approaches in the mental health field for eight years.
My specialty is in treating derpression. I have formed an approach called Mindful Action Therapy, which incorporates ACT, Behavioral Activation, Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy and a program I created called Mindful Hike.
I treat teens, young adults and adults who struggle with mood related problems, identity issues and major life transitions.
Mindful Action Therapy is a holistic approach to treating depression. One of the first things I do is to actually get clients physically moving with my Mindful Hike program. I teach various mindfulness practices on these hikes, which are informed by my extensive background in Tai Chi and meditation. I also incorporate a protocol I call the Lifestyle Assessment & Design Process, wherein we look at every facet of the client's life pinpointing areas where a little change in behavior can go a long way towards reducing the symptoms of depression. I use ACT to move through the obstacles to instituting such change.
