Hello all!
My name is Ryan and i currently work as a school teacher in the UK and also teach a meditation class. My main degree was in psychology and i have been interested in therapies based on mindfulness for some time. I recently met with a MBCTist who suggested i contact this site (esp. Steve Heyes) to find out more about it. Briefly, i am looking to potentialy train as a therapist or to conduct some emprical research on mindfulness based therapies here in the UK; with the focus on the educational/behavioural merits to thearapy i.e., Could mindfulness based therapies help to improve grades in underachieving pupils?
Any comments, ideas or suggestions would be most helpful!
Where to start?
These are my suggestions about how to proceed.
1. Become a paid member of this site. (Membership can cost you as little as $1US if you choose, and we all know how weak the dollar is now, so that's almost nothing to you.) This gives you access to all of the videos, articles, attachments, etc. Read everything you can. (when you really dig, this website is enormous)
2. Read the literature: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy by Hayes, Strosahl, Wilson, or Get out of your Mind and into your Life by Hayes, etc. Whatever strikes you.
3. Click on "find an ACT therapist" on the left side of the screen. Then sort by "United Kingdom". Or go to the general membership directory at www.contextualpsychology.org/membership_directory and look at the UK list. Talk to someone locally about where to start.
4. If you get sucked in, join the ACT Listserv (click on "discussions" on the left side of the screen).
Good Luck!
Emily
