Living Well With Multiple Sclerosis: Reclaiming Your Life With Mindfulness & Acceptance (with John P. Forsyth & Ed Hickling)

Nov 10 2007 - 9:00am
Nov 10 2007 - 12:00pm

People who have MS are faced with significant health and life concerns that can easily lead to feelings of despair, anger, loss, frustration, and depression. The combination of MS and unpleasant emotional spin off can exacerbate the illness, while leaving people feeling stuck and struggling with a sense that their lives are shrinking to the size of a postage stamp. The uncertainties of the disease, the potential loss of roles we're familiar with and comfortable doing, among all the other potential fears that can accompany a chronic disease like MS, can often add to the burden of the illness.

Cognitive behavioral techniques are some of the best methods for coping with chronic, potentially disabling diseases such as MS. These powerful techniques are designed to foster new skills to help people like you to break free from excess suffering associated with anxiety and health concerns. And, they've been shown to aid individuals who need to deal with a daily battle with an uncertain and frightening future. One new and powerful approach is called Acceptance and Commitment Therapy or ACT (said as one word).

This workshop will provide participants with new tools to face the ongoing struggle with MS in a way that will help them get untangled from the excess emotional and mental suffering associated with the illness while finding ways to refocus energy and attention on living well with MS, and with a sense of purpose and dignity. This approach fosters greater present focus by teaching mindfulness, acceptance, and compassion and a greater clarity about what people truly care about in life and how to live out those values even with MS.

The workshop with take 1/2 day and will be designed to provide a solid background in two approaches, ACT and mindfulness. Participants will gain practical tools and strategies to live better with the disease, everyday problems, and the challenges of an uncertain future.
