WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
The Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Case Conceptualization workshop will introduce clinicians to the basics of applying ACT to clinical concerns. ACT is a unique evidence-based intervention combining mindfulness strategies with behavior change strategies in order to increase greater psychological flexibility and valued living.
Workshop participants will become familiar with the six core ACT principles: acceptance, committed action, defusion, self-as-context, values, and contacting the present moment. Workshop participants will be able to select ACT interventions appropriate for addressing specific core principles. This workshop will be based on content from the forthcoming publication Case Conceptualization in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, (Moran and Bach, in preparation, New Harbinger).
WORKSHOP ACTIVITIES
There will be a 60 to 90 minute didactic orientation to ACT, followed by demonstrations, large group exercises and case-based practice. Participants will be provided with handouts to use with their clients for assessment and homework assignments to augment in session interventions. Training materials will also be distributed for the participants to use to facilitate ACT case formulation in training and practice.
TARGET AUDIENCE
This workshop is suitable for clinicians with little exposure to ACT who would like to learn how to apply ACT broadly. It is also suitable for participants who have attended ACT experiential workshops and would like to improve their skill in functional contextual case formulation and deciding when to apply specific ACT interventions.
