This once monthly teleclass will meet on Thursdays, beginning June 19, at 6:00 p.m. EASTERN (last one, Sept. 30). The initial session will outline a protocol that can be adapted in length. Other sessions will continue protocol discussion and allow participants to tailor content and discussions to their settings and interests. ACT processes will be integrated into discussions and also looked at through the ACT model developed by Drs. Polk and Hambright. This intensive workshop covers the application of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT, pronounced as one word) for persons suffering from any of the major anxiety disorders. ACT is a newer third-generation behavior therapy that balances mindfulness and acceptance processes with commitment and behavior change processes.

This one-day training will introduce participants to this exciting form of therapy. The instructors will describe the ACT model and explain how it compares to and differs from traditional CBT. The instructors will review the rapidly-growing body of research on ACT and its processes. Attendees will learn to conceptualize client problems from an ACT perspective and how to apply basic ACT interventions. Attendees will be invited to participate in a variety of exercises to help experience ACT processes and to better understand their clients’ perspectives and struggles.

Some main definitions of ACT will be described and also ACT as a 3rd wave development in behavioural Therapy tradition and as a contemporary re-stating of the "Four Noble Truths" in Buddhist tradition. Dr. Robyn Walser has begun her 6 session telephone class for beginning and intermediate learning. The first class is recorded and can be listened to in preparation for session 2 on 10:00 a.m. PACIFIC on July 11. Dr. Robyn Walser will teach this group over six months. Her style is flexible, engaging and informative. The group meets monthly for one hour through December. The group is structured to maximize your learning of ACT and can include a number of things. We explore everything from initial implementation to using ACT with specific clients. We are flexible to meet the groups needs.

In this series of 6 classes, participants will be introduced to and will practice the main techniques used in each of the six ACT core therapeutic processes: Acceptance, Experiential Aviodance, Cognitive defusion, Being Present in the moment, Self as Context and Defining Valued directions. Participants may choose to attend one or all of the sessions in service of the development of their competent ACT practice. (Places are limited to 20 participants per session to maximise practical experience in the session)
