Panel/Case Conference at World Conference RE: ACT in Private Practice?

As an ACT therapist in private practice, what issues do you struggle with? How is doing ACT in a private practice setting different from other settings and what challenges have you encountered? Do you have ideas or suggestions for navigating the private practice environment?

I am interested in gathering ideas for a posible "ACT in Private Practice" Panel or Case Conference at the World Conference in London. If you have ideas about relevant topics we should discuss, even if you do NOT plan to attend, please share them.

Please visit our online poll and present feedback about the topic(s) you would like to hear discussed at the ACT in Private Practice I session at World Con II.

ACT in private practice

Not sure how much I could contribute but establishing a private practice in Sydney Australia and using ACT about 60% of time. Have been thinking about something I could present but .......... Would certainly think "a loose discussion" at least would be worthwhile from my perspective.

Issues like .... How to "sell" to referring GP's when they are only just catching up to CBT being the "treatment of choice" and in some cases just starting to refer to psychologists. I think my ACT spiel has put 1 or 2 off already as they seek out CBT practicing psychologists as this is all they know and this is what is being promoted in the current climate whilst mental health is receiving a lot of attention in the media. Do I lie and say I am practicing CBT ? Of course not, it's just a thought!

Certainly the patients love it, though it's not great for business as they are only needing a few sessions, especially if they purchase Steve's book and so some "self helpish" stuff as well.

ACT as CBT

Peter, I think these are great topics of discussion and I'd encourage them being in a panel.

I do private practice one day/week and pretty much do solely ACT. I certainly consider ACT a form of CBT. Oftentimes when someone asks me about what type of therapy I do, I often introduce ACT as a version of CBT. If their attention isn't already wandering as soon as i mention CBT and they actually express continued interest, I then go on to tell them how ACT is one of a new wave of CBT therapies, how its different than "traditional CBT," etc. Depending upon the person, i may mention issues around differences in the outcome data and level of evidence. I don't feel at all like I am being misleading or anything when I do this. People who know CBT will immediately understand the difference and those who don't really understand CBT will get a chance to be educated a little bit about these emerging therapies.

Anyways, this could be an example of the kinds of things that one would discuss at such a panel at WorldCon. I think there would be plenty of interest from people attending, assuming we have a few americans at the conference. Go for it!

Developing Countries

I think that it is a great idea!!
Particularly, the use of ACT in private practice (mainly in public health services) in developing countries, I think, has a differential, because a lot of people have important social problems and the way that they deal with it is extremely important in a context that these problems probably will not be resolved in a short time.
