ACT and Smoking Cessation?

I have recently taken up a post with a Smoking Cessation service, and would like to bring an ACT approach into the group work programme. I would appreciate any information regarding, research, papers, books, websites etc that may be helpfull.

Thank You

See Rick Brown's work

Another person doing essentially ACT-based smoking work is Rick Brown at Brown University.

Brown, R.A., Palm, K.M., Strong, D.R., Lejuez, C.W., Kahler, C.W., Zvolensky, M.J., Hayes, S.C., Wilson, K.G., & Gifford, E.V. (in press). Distress tolerance treatment for early lapse smokers: Rationale, program description and preliminary findings. Behavior Modification.

Liz Gifford and several of us from Reno have a second, larger smoking trial done and under review. It will publish soon somewhere. The measure of acceptance of smoking related private events also works as a mediator.

Smoking Info

Hi Peter,

You may find it difficult to track down information (as I did!). There isn't much out there that is published in the specific area of ACT and smoking cessation. I am currently studying the use of the IRAP (an RFT-inspired methodology) in the domain of tobacco-addiction. Though my research does not directly involve the use of therapeutic interventions I have some knowledge of the area and where best to look for info.
I know that some of the nice folks over in the Oregon Research Institute are conducting important work on smoking cessation with adolescents (Shawn Boles, Tony Biglan and Co.; https://www.earlyadolescence.org/node?page=1).
Also, according to a September post on the ACT listserve by Steve Hayes (the one about mediational effects and the AAQ) there is also another encouraging study due out by Elizabeth Gifford. To my knowledge there is only one other researcher specialising in the use of ACT therapies for smoking cessation: Monica Hernandez from the University of Almeria in Spain (but her work is unpublished as her PhD thesis). I hope this helps and don't hesitate to email if I can further assist or if you have any information to add.

Regards and happy hunting,

Nigel

Smoking Cessation

Hi Nigel,Thanks for the link for www.earlyadolescence site, however i couldnt access the session by session links about the study, which is a real pity as it looked like a good format for groups. However i am willing to have my feelings of frustration "in the service of" providing an ACT based group :)
