ACT and Caregivers--Alzheimers in Particular

I am not sure that I have technically come to the right place. But from what I have seen of you guys, and read about your work, makes me think I will at least not be tied to a post and beaten with a wet noodle if I am NOT in the right place.

My sister forwarded a copy of the Time magazine article, I think entitled, Happiness Isn't Normal, to me and said she thought it was interesting.

I read it, VERY interesting. Have begun to apply what I think ACT means, and have already found great relief to some unneccesary suffering I have been putting myself through in dealing, or not dealing with the stress I have been under as the full time caregiver to our mother. (Not to mention the only sister here in State is quite possibly undiagnosed BPD, this is a totally crazy situation, because I am supposed to count on her and her children to help me care for our Mom. If she is really BDP, you know what I mean.) I am at a REAL LIVE breaking point emotionally. Thus, even though with BS degree in Biology with minor in Chemistry, and around 36 Masters hours, I can hardly communicate well without great difficulty.

I need anything you have to offer. I'm just too tired to know where to go look for it.

If nothing else, I think this could be an excellent thesis for one of your "labbies". I was one of those once. The Columbian grads in our lab, named me "Carol the Hen", I would say it in Spanish like they did, but, don't know the spelling of hen... But, it fit. I quite capable of listing all the lables I have used over the years, but won't--just yet. But Caretaker is right there at the top of the list. Thus, my unrealistic view of reality. Thanks for helping me clear some of the fog, and in advance for any help you are able to offer.

I live in south central Mississippi. I tried to contact Kelly Wilson, at Ole' Miss, but my e-mail was returned undeliverable.

Sincerely,

Caroline (Carol the Hen)

Another place to look for feedback from an ACT perspective is to check out the ACT for the public listerve on www.yahoogroups.com. You can join for free and post questions there and usually receive speedy replies.

Caregiving

You might find a new book by Susan M. McCurry on Caregiving useful.
She is an old ACT hand, and mixes in acceptance work with a lot a very practical advice. You can find it on Amazon easily

Hopeful

Thank you Dr. Hayes for the work you do, and for taking the time to offer me another way to face these challenges.
